Topic: Evidence Based Practice: Tips & Tricks for the Busy OT

Presenter: Dr. Jamie Bergner, OTD, OTR/L, CHT, COMT

About this course: Evidence Based Practice (EBP) is challenging for busy clinicians of all levels of experience. This talk is designed to reach novices to experts by focusing on EBP through the lens of efficiency. This presentation will review the basic fundamentals for EPB, help participants strategically plan professional growth, and share tips and tricks to make EPB more efficient for the busy OT!

Course Objectives:

  1. Participants will understand the need for research evidence for sound clinical reasoning in OT clinical practice.
  2. Participants will classify a research question into an effective search strategy.
  3. Participants will identify EBP technology assists to manage time effectively.
  4. Participants will differentiate between various critical appraisal forms matching research designs to evaluate the quality and rigor of evidence.

About the Presenter: Jamie Bergner is a practicing occupational therapist, certified hand therapist, and certified orthopedic manual therapist at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, specializing in traumatic injuries of the upper extremity. She graduated with her post-professional doctorate in occupational therapy with an elective track in education in 2016 and a Bachelor’s of Science in Occupational Therapy in 2000. Jamie is faculty for the International Academy of Orthopedic Medicine-US Hand and Upper Extremity Track and teaches upper extremity continuing education courses nationally. In addition, she is developing curriculum for MedBridge and is teaching four continuing education courses in an online subscription-based platform. In 2019, she joined Cox College, a MSOT Program as adjunct faculty and teaches graduate courses online. Passionate about evidence-informed care, Jamie mentors level II fieldwork students and new therapists, is actively involved in conducting research and promoting clinician-led research pathways at Vanderbilt. She is a published author through the Journal of Hand Therapy, the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, and OT Practice. She has presented at numerous state, regional, and national conferences and is a National Board Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) volunteer. She has an amazing husband of 19 years, and two active children ages 14 and 9, a cat named Delilah and a Labradoodle puppy named Samson. She loves spending time with her family outside hiking, biking, and teams up with her teenage daughter as current green belts in Krav Maga/martial arts.
