Topic: "Understanding the World of Low Vision"

Establishing an understanding of the functional impact clients with low vision face is imperative to occupational therapy practice. This course will outline how OT practitioners can apply proper modifications to increase effectiveness of treatment as well as education on strategies and low vision aids that are available to increase clients' overall occupational performance. 

About the Presenter: Tatyana (Tanya) Arkushenko, OTAS

Tanya is an OTA student from Chattanooga, Tennessee. She developed an interest in occupational therapy through her work with students with special needs in high school. Tanya will complete the occupational therapy assistant program in 2021 and has the interest to continue her education to become an OT with focus on serving clients with SCI/TBI. In her free time, Tanya enjoys hiking, drawing, and volunteering through missionary work. 

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the common diagnoses of eye conditions that cause low vision and the affected populations.

  2. Describe both compensatory strategies and maintenance strategies to increase independence during activities of daily living.

  3. Understand the task and environmental modifications that can be made during treatment to increase occupational performance.

  4. Identify low vision aids and assistive devices to enhance patient independence and function in cost effective ways.
