A Mixed Method Study: An Interprofessional Learning Experience with Occupational Therapy Assistant and Physical Therapist Assistant Students through a Simulated Educational Environment

Speaker: Brooke Gentry, OTD, MS, OTR/L

Speaker Bio:  Brooke is an occupational therapist that holds a Bachelor of Science from Western Kentucky University, Master’s in Occupational Therapy from Milligan College, and a post-professional Doctorate in Occupational Therapy from Eastern Kentucky University.  She is an AOTA Certified Fieldwork Educator. Working as an occupational therapist over the past 11 years, Brooke has practiced in acute care at Vanderbilt University Medical Center while assisting in providing students with clinical instruction and didactic lectures of which ignited her desire to transition to become a full-time educator. She currently works at South College Nashville as the OTA program director. In her free time, she enjoys running and spending time with her husband and 2-year-old son. 


About this Presentation: This presentation looks at a mixed method study on interprofessional collaboration skills that can be taught in the academic setting with occupational therapy assistant and physical therapist assistant students, with take away strategies that may be used in both the academic and clinical setting. 


Objectives:

1. Identify agencies and governing bodies that are involved with interprofessional collaboration

2. Identify theoretical frameworks that address collaborative and social learning

3. Understand literature related to interprofessional collaborations in the academic setting

4. Identify strategies in the academic setting to teach interprofessional collaboration
