About This Course: This course offers insight for current mentors, mentees, or those thinking of entering into a mentorship relationship. Dr. Cindy Blackwell, former TNOTA president and mentor to many OTs through the TNOTA Mentorship Program, will share key components of a mentorship relationship. She will also share challenges that may arise in mentorship relationships and solutions to overcome these challenges. By the end of this course, participants will be able to enter into a mentorship relationship with an increased confidence and understanding of mentorship.

By the end of this presentation, participants will:

1. Understand key components of mentorship
2. Articulate key “dos” and “don’ts” of a mentorship relationship
3. Be able to execute helpful strategies to bolster a mentorship relationship

Presenter: Dr. Cindy Blackwell, OTD, OTR/L, is an occupational therapist who has practiced in pediatrics since 2012. Dr. Blackwell has served on the TNOTA board since 2018, most recently as TNOTA President (2020-2023). She is also the founder and lead facilitator of the TNOTA Pediatric Community of Practice. Dr. Blackwell currently works as the Director of Medical Services at Project Play Therapy. She has lived in Nashville with her family since 2016. Prior to moving to Tennessee, Dr. Blackwell worked in Chicago in a variety of pediatric settings, was on the board of the Illinois Occupational Therapy Association, and served as adjunct faculty in the Occupational Therapy program at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where she earned her MS (2012) and post-professional OTD (2013). Dr. Blackwell was part of the 2014 AOTA Emerging Leaders Cohort, focusing her research on expanding OT's role in school mental health via OT student education. Dr. Blackwell is passionate about OT advocacy, pediatric mental health, and empowering the next generation of OT practitioners and students to provide informed, high quality, evidenced-based services for our clients.
