About TNOTA

About TNOTA: The Tennessee Occupational Therapy Association (TNOTA) is the statewide professional organization dedicated to representing the interests and concerns of occupational therapy practitioners, students, educators, consumers, and stakeholders across Tennessee. TNOTA is a volunteer-run, member-driven organization.

TNOTA is a state affiliate of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), which is the national professional association. TNOTA and AOTA share the common goals of working to advance the profession of occupational therapy, the public’s awareness of and access to needed occupational therapy services, and the contributions of occupational therapy to health, wellness, productivity and quality of life.

TNOTA is available to its members to serve as a resource and answer questions regarding best practice for occupational therapy in Tennessee.

About the Tennessee Board of Occupational Therapy

The Board of Occupational Therapy is responsible for safeguarding the health, safety, and welfare of Tennesseans, by requiring that all who practice occupational therapy within the state be qualified to practice. The Board interprets the laws, rules, and regulations to determine the appropriate standards of practice in an effort to ensure the highest degree of professional conduct. The Board is responsible for the investigation of alleged violations of the Practice Act and Rules and is responsible for the discipline of licensees who are found guilty of such violation.

The Board consists of OT and OTA members, as well as a consumer member. The Board meets four times per year. The meetings are open to the public and minutes are posted to the board’s website. Any member of the public may submit a question to the board for consideration (minimum 30 days in advance) and/or attend a board meeting in person to provide public comment.

The Board of Occupational Therapy exists primarily for the protection of consumers via ensuring competence and qualifications of occupational therapy practitioners in the state of Tennessee. The Board is responsible for:

  • Adopting rules pursuant to statutes passed by the Tennessee Legislature

  • Granting, renewing, and reinstating licensure to practice occupational therapy

  • Issuing policies and guidelines on continuing education requirements

  • Investigating complaints against OT practitioners and taking disciplinary action
