Philanthropy Name: The Koinonia Foundation

Description of Philanthropy:
The Koinonia Foundation began in order to support Camp Koinonia and the associated weekend camps. Camp Koinonia is a week long camp for people ages 7-21 with disabilities put on by the Therapeutic Recreation department at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Counselors are paired on a one-to-one ratio with a camper for the duration of the week. Campers get to participate in activities such as horseback riding, canoeing, ropes courses, arts and crafts, yoga, and many more. There are also special events every night, for example and everyone's favorite being the dance. The best part about Camp Koinonia are the unique bonds that are formed there that have a lasting impact on both the campers and counselors. I, a current OT student at UTHSC, volunteered with this camp for 4 years and I credit it on providing me and many other current, future, and past OT students with important background knowledge on working with people with disabilities. The foundation later expanded to provide monthly programming to adults ages 21+ with recreational and community based activities. Some of these activities include dinner and a movie, trips to the aquarium, holiday parties, and even special weekend camps. With the cancellation of Camp Koinonia 2020 and suspension of the monthly programming due to COVID-19, I believe this foundation could really use some support.

Philanthropy Name: High Hopes Development Center

Description of Philanthropy:
High Hopes Development Center was established in 1984 by five Middle Tennessee families who recognized their children's needs were not being met in local preschools. Each of these families had a child with a special need or chronic disease and they found themselves driving to several locations weekly to receive all of the therapy services needed. These visionaries were determined to create a place where their children's needs could be met, both academically and therapeutically, and where their children would be educated among their typically-developing peers.
