Topic: Occupational Therapy: A Glimpse into Hand Therapy Presenter: Leslie M. Sutton, OTR/L, CHT About this course: The presentation will introduce the field of hand therapy and how it developed as a specialty of OT. It will cover the organizations involved in hand therapy and how they help chart the clinician on the path of hand therapy as well as support the hand therapist. A glimpse into the members of the hand therapy team, diagnosis, interventions utilized frequently in hand therapy will also be addressed. Course Objectives: 1. Understand the history of Hand Therapy 2. Recognize definitions in Hand Therapy 3.Recognize members of the Hand Therapy team 4.Common diagnosis seen in Hand Therapy 5.Common interventions utilized in Hand Therapy
About the Presenter: Leslie graduated from OT school at University of LA - Monroe in December of 2000. She began her career at the Green Clinic in Ruston, LA performing work conditioning, FCEs, and hand therapy. She and her husband moved to Alabama in 2002 and she became the hand therapist for Decatur General Rehab Access joining ASHT and actively pursuing her further love of hand therapy. In 2006, they moved to Memphis, TN where she joined OrthoMemphis and passed the CHT exam while on maternity leave with her first child. The family moved to Louisiana in 2010 and Leslie continued her career working in hands in Mandeville and Covington, LA. In 2013, they returned to Memphis and Leslie worked in the school system for 3 years before rejoining the staff at OrthoMemphis, now Orthosouth. During that time she was honored to be accepted into the American Society of Shoulder and Elbow Therapists. Leslie left Orthosouth this year during the COVID pandemic to be able to care for her school aged children and is currently working PRN in Lakeland school district.
